Golf Tips for You
THE GRIP
The grip is the heart of every swing, you cannot move forward to learning other tricks without mastering it first. Unlike men, women may find it harder to overcome errors mainly because of size and strength. This is why a very good foundation, the proper grip that is, is very important for women golfers to learn as it enables them to project a strong technical swing.
Regardless of sex, every golfer seeks for the natural grip. Since your hands are the only connection you have with the club, you should be able to find the right grip that creates a natural feel as if you are moving as one.
Once you find your natural grip, you will notice that the club does not slip in your swings, you are able to swing in continuous motion, and the impact is more impressively powerful when you hit the ball.
For right-handed golfers, the top or lead-hand will be the left hand while the bottom or trailing hand will be the right hand. If you are left-handed, you will be using the opposite hand for your top and bottom.
There are several grip forms and the most common is the “overlap” which is suitable to those with normal to big hand sizes. If you have shorter fingers, you may get stable swings using the “interlock”. Lastly, you may try the “ten finger” trick if your hands are weaker. The best way to find your natural grip is to try the different forms and then stick to the one that suits you best.
PROPER POSTURE
Practicing proper posture is equally important to learning the right grip. It is what helps you yield more balance and consistency in your swings. All beginners are taught that the proper golf posture would be to have a straight back with the butt sticking out and chin up.
Golfing tips for women do not necessarily advice this to every woman golfer. The fact is, not all women have perfectly straight backs. Forcing your back to be straight when it is naturally curved will cause you back pains and may damage your spine after a while.
If you have a good straight back though, you should make it a habit to keep a proper posture throughout your swings. All it takes is practice and a little getting used to but what matters the most is that you are comfortable enough to make your hits.
SWING THRU THE BALL
While hitting the ball cleanly, crisply and powerfully is your ultimate goal, it should not be how you think about your swing.
Your swing should remain relaxed and fluid, and focusing too much on hitting the ball itself will create an awkward, hurried effort and a herky-jerky result.
A telltale sign is if you take the club back slowly and surely, only to jerk it down from the top of your swing and slap at the ball haphazardly.
Instead, think about the idea of “hitting the ball with your practice swing.”
Admittedly, it takes some practice to make this mental shift.
However, once you can hit through the ball using the same relaxed approach you use in your practice swing, the ball will take care of itself.
It will jump off the club with velocity and accuracy.
Sweep the Ball
This tip is somewhat related to our recommendation to swing “through the ball.”
Longer clubs such as the driver, 3-metal, 5-metal and 7-metal are best hit by sweeping the club head along the ground, collecting the ball in the process.
With mid and long irons, you “hit down,” making contact with the ball slightly before the club.
However, with the driver and longer clubs, place the ball slightly forward in the stance, and think about sweeping the ball.
